Recently my husband and I bought 10 acres, 6 acres are cleared. We have paid to have the land brush hogged up til now. We want to buy a tractor because there are many things we want to do and I do not want to pay someone each time I want something done. Eventually I'd like to have a box blade, tiller, disc, and a loader. For now I'd like to atleast just get a brush hog with the tractor.
I've been looking at tractors and I think I've settled on the New Holland, either the 35 or the 40. I'm thinking the 35 is enough. I know I want a 4/4 as well. I'm hoping I can get some feedback from everyone here as to what I might want to get or want to stay away from. This is our first tractor so I really don't know too much of the ins and outs.

There are three basic frame sizes in the NH line. 35-45 HP are all built on the largest frame size. The frame size really defines what the tractor will do with basic implement sizes and so forth. In most cases, the larger engine will give more reserve capacity and allow jobs to be done more quickly.
I looked at tractors in this size range a little over a year ago and decided on the TC45. I bought a manual gear transmission, because I am accustomed to them, but many new tractor owners opt for the Hydrostatic (HST) transmission.
I live at high altitude in the mountains, so my TC45 engine only produces about 38 HP due to the thin air. So, the performance of my tractor is more like that of a TC40. I like it very much. If you go with the 35, you will get a three cylinder engine, but the 40 and 45 have four cylinder engines and will produce better low end torque.
I recommend getting one of the larger ones with the four cylinder engine. This is especially true if you get the HST which uses a few HP in the transmission. You can always throttle back a bigger tractor. The cost from one engine size to the next is not bad once you have selected a frame size. The fuel usage difference is insignificant.
I hope that you are as happy with your NH as I have been with mine. ....

I test drove one of theese when I was shopping. I prefer the hydro just because it was initially more comfortable for my wife to drive. I was haveing a look around at brush hogs this past week and most manufactures have a minimum reccomendation of 35 hp for a hog. At least on the brands I saw. If a brush hog is a factor I agree with AC5z0. Assumeing that the cost difference is not too great I would much rather have the 4 cylinder. It does seem a lot of tractor for that much acerage. I would think you have to decide what the longer term usage will be. Tilling, landscapeing, mowing etc. You might find it more cost effective to continue to pay to have it hogged or have it dozed and go with a smaller machine. ....

A 30-32 hp tractor with 25 pto hp will generally run a 5 foot rotary cutter just fine. If you're looking for a bigger cutter then a 35hp or larger tractor may be needed.

The other two posters both have valid points about the overall size of the tractor. I bought the large frame size because I do a lot of loader work. I have pallet forks on my tractor about 80% of the time. I use it to move heavy machinery as well as moving large rocks other things.
My post takes as a given that you were considering the 35 or 40, and you may well get by will less. The middle size NH frame carries engines from 25 HP to 33 HP. The larger of these (33 HP) TC33D is worth considering.
The TC30 is also in this range and offers a lot of tractor for the buck. It is designed to attract buyers to NH. Most people find the TC33D to be fancier and worth the extra cost. I also like the better visibility and the synthetic cowling and fenders on the TC33/35/40/45. ....
